Senior Supt Piet Marx, acting Polokwane Police Commissioner is adamant that with the necessary support from the community that the crime rate in the city can be curbed and with all relevant structures in place the battle against it eventually won. “Over the past months community policing has been implemented throughout the country and in Polokwane we are reaping the fruit of these combined efforts by the Police and the community members in the fight against crime,” Marx says. Sector policing is an approach to policing whereby the service area of a police station is divided into smaller, manageable areas known as sectors. For each sector, the Police dedicate a police official who is known as the sector commander. The community and its sector commander are active partners in ensuring local safety and security. The sector commander involves all role-players in identifying the policing needs in the sector and dealing with the root causes of crime and factors that contribute to crime. The goal is to bring about effective crime prevention by launching intelligence-driven crime prevention projects in partnership with the local community. “The support we received from the Polokwane Chamber of Business is remarkable. There are, however, many areas where we still need the community to become more involved. I have found that community members commit themselves in the fight against crime but as soon as the crime rate drops, they withdraw from the effort. The community is the eyes and ears of the police and we rely heavily on support and information from them,” says Marx.
